201 Continental Avenue - leased by the Cultural Center

Update as of June 22, 2026:

On March 13, 2026, Peter Dunsay of the Cultural Center contacted the Mayor and Council via email to report the handicap ramp was in need of repairs. Based on the condition of the ramp, an evaluation of the entire Borough owned structure was required. The DPW Superintendent had the building inspected by the Construction Official, Joint Insurance Fund Safety Inspector, Fire Official, and Health Official.  On Friday, May 8th, a final evaluation was performed with the Borough Engineer. As a result of the condition of the structure, the Construction Official placed the unsafe structure sticker on the Borough owned building as permitted by state law. The DPW DID NOT close down the building. The closure is an immediate emergency as a matter of public health, safety and welfare. Failure to do so would be a matter of negligence as the safety of the members of the Cultural Center and public would have been in jeopardy.

This was not a decision taken lightly. Earlier this year, the Borough closed the steps of the pedestrian bridge over Route 4 due to the deterioration of the steps until the state undertook the necessary repairs. Safety always takes precedence even when it appears as inconvenient.

Since the closure of 201 Continental Avenue, members of the governing body, the Borough Attorney, Construction Official and Borough Administrator met with the full Cultural Center Board on May 22nd. After discussing the requirements to address the numerous violations, the Cultural Center Board was given specific tasks to complete. Upon receipt of the Cultural Center Board's response during the first week of June, the Mayor and Council discussed this matter further at its June 11th Closed Session.

Attached to the link below is a letter that was sent to the Cultural Center Board reiterating the Borough's position from the May 22nd meeting as well as clarifying each party's responsibilities under the lease agreement.

In conclusion, the Mayor and Council have been in clear communication with the Cultural Center Board. The Board and general public will continue to be updated on the status of this matter.
