The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) released information warning residents of fraudulent calls targeting the recently approved $100 Residential Universal Bill Credit (RUBC) for residential electric customers served by Public Service Electric and Gas, Jersey Central Power and Light, Atlantic City Electric, and Rockland Electric Company.
BPU received reports of unsolicited calls from scammers posing as utility representatives to “sign up” customers for RUBC while seeking personal and financial information from customers. BPU indicates that the RUBC credit is automatically applied to those customers who are eligible and that customers do not need to take further action.
As part of a $430 million relief program, 3.9 million customers are eligible and receive the credits in $50 installments appearing on their September and October utility bills to manage high energy costs. BPU indicates that the increased costs stem primarily from higher capacity prices in the PJM wholesale electric market and have significantly impacted utility bills statewide.
Residents who receive suspicious calls or need additional information should contact the BPU Customer Assistance Division at 800-624-0241.
